In war, you say a prayer for your dead and ride on, because there is always another fight over the next horizon.

Among the Malkieri, there is a saying that history becomes memory and then becomes legend. It is a comforting lie. In most cases, history is simply forgotten. Like the moon reflecting in drops of water, people and events sparkle for a moment, and vanish beyond all recovery.

In the few years since the fall of the Seven Towers in 955 NE, much has already been forgotten. Many Malkieri have turned from the old ways, forgetting their mothers and fathers, pretending to be Shienaran or Arafellin or Kandori. Men have unbound their hadori; women no longer paint the ki'sain on their brows.

Although it may be painful to remember a land that may be lost forever, memory has become our duty, a duty that I take up in the pages of this history.

Malkier was once one of the Borderlands, buffering Shienar and Arafel from the Great Blight, but fell to the Shadow in 955 NE, betrayed by Cowin Gemallan. (Gemallan was subsequently captured by Jain Farstrider.) It was one of the first nations formed after the War of the Hundred Years, to provide stability and security along the Blight.

In the few years since the fall of the Seven Towers in 955 NE, much has already been forgotten. Many Malkieri have turned from the old ways, forgetting their mothers and fathers, pretending to be Shienaran, Arafellin, Kandori or Saldean. Men have unbound their hadori; women no longer paint the ki'sain on their brows.
